Introducing..... “ZWLCT”

Advanced Solar Photonics (ASP) the cutting-edge developer of laser equipment for solar panel processing, thin-film solar cells, and commercial solar products presents the photovoltaic industry with Zero Width Laser Cutting Technology® (ZWLCT®). This process is a non-contact method which splits glass and other non-metallic brittle materials on the molecular level with tremendous speed, no material loss, and no chips or other debris associated with conventional scribe and break technology.

Precisely cutting glass and other substrates has always been a vexing problem for the solar industry. For years now, there have been two major cutting methods: mechanical scribing or sawing and laser cutting. The explosive rise of the photovoltaic industry has put new demands on these existing cutting technologies. Advanced Solar Photonics utilizes ZWLCT® in its Fantom G8™, a thin-film laser scribing system.

"Zero Width Laser Cutting Technology® can be used for precise glass separation at production speeds not previously possible and with edge characteristics not attainable by any other process to date. The processed glass is four to five times mechanically stronger and has defect free edges without additional edge processing, said Edgardo Rodriguez, Vice President of sales for Advanced Solar Photonics. “Using this patented method aids the glass in withstanding extreme day/night temperature changes in the harsh desert environments by maintaining the integrity of the glass, thus strengthening it and ensuring long term stability.”

Zero Width Laser Cutting Technology® produces the maximum MicroCrack depth in the subsurface layer of the glass and not thermal-fracturing of the glass. After performing this application, the human eye is unable to see any change in the properties of the glass; however, when applying a small amount of pressure, the glass will split along the scribe line. Following the split, the glass has no particular damage and the highest edge quality which one can safely run their finger over requiring no further processing making grinding and cleaning lines unnecessary."

Advanced Solar Photonics Announces Silicon Solar Panel Dicing and Scribing System

Advanced Solar Photonics, (ASP), a developer of laser scribing, laser marking, laser cutting, edge deletion & edge isolation laser systems for the solar industry, announces the Blackstar,™ a silicon solar panel dicing & scribing system.

Developed as an alternative to mechanical saws, which may damage thin and complex solar cell materials and substrates while cutting, the BlackStar™increases the yield per panel and maximizes throughput, while minimizing the heat affected zone. Designed specifically for solar cells and low-K substrates, this wafer dicing system is used for dicing many semiconductor materials and silicon composites in solar panel production. Utilizing Fantom Wafer Dicing Technology™ (FWDT™), which was developed by ASP’s parent company, Fonon, the BlackStar™ is highly accurate and 20 times faster than a mechanical saw.

“Not only does the BlackStar™ provide precision, accuracy and resolution which mechanical methods are unable to provide, said Kristen Bruenig, Market Manger for ASP, “using a BlackStar™ laser system, has additional significant advantages over other technologies, such as: eliminating the need for cleaning solutions which produce hazardous waste, having a cut edge that is free of stress and the elimination of micro-cracks, fragmentation or chipping.”

The researchers at Advanced Solar Photonics are dedicated to providing laser application solutions in the solar panel manufacturing industry. Utilizing state-of the-art Fiber Laser technology and proprietary processes and equipment, the Advanced Solar Photonics’ research team has developed the capabilities to now offer laser equipment specifically tailored to produce delicate solar panels.

The Latest Thin-Film Processing System from Advanced Solar Photonics

Advanced Solar Photonics, (ASP), a developer of laser scribing, laser marking, laser cutting, edge deletion & edge isolation laser systems for the solar industry, has started promoting the FL600, a thin-film solar cell processing system.

The FL600 is capable of direct fiber laser patterning on indium tin oxide (ITO), TCO, CTO, anti-reflective coatings on glass and PET plastic film as used in the flat panel display industry. ASP is utilizing this proven technology for solar applications. The FL600 is able to accommodate the conventional 2’ x 4’ size solar panels and is also available in a larger format with similar technology for the larger size solar panels. Additionally, the FL600 has an optional conveyor to assist in the maneuverability of fragile solar panel materials for continuous manufacturing.

“The FL600 is an easy to use machine and is ideal for high-tech applications such as edge deletion or isolation,” said Kristen Breunig, Market Manager for ASP. “ASP is privileged to have this technology which has been developed and utilized by our parent company, Fonon Technology International, in the flat panel display for over 15 years.“

As the solar industry moves towards the abundant and cost effective thin-film panels, it is increasingly necessary to develop equipment capable of processing the largest solar panels possible. Although thin-film is the most inexpensive, it is also is the least energy efficient, leading to the exponential increase in substrate sizes. Researchers have found that a ten times increase in substrate area only results in a 2.5 times increase in equipment costs. Advanced Solar Photonics not only offers standard equipment for marking, etching, scribing and edge isolation of smaller silicon solar panels but is now developing systems and equipment to process up to an eight foot (G8) thin-film solar panel.

ASP is located in a 318,000 square foot headquarters in Lake Mary, Florida employing an international team of technology driven professionals. Reaching out to the photovoltaic industry, ASP strives to lower manufacturing costs utilizing proven patented technology geared to improve and lower the cost per kilowatt.
